Friday drinks: Palm Beach special

Happy Friday! This week we have a perfect summer cocktail to get you in a vacation mood – the Palm Beach special.

It’s hot here in Hollywood. Well, actually, it’s in the 70s and 80s, but we like to celebrate the change in seasons even if we don’t have much change in our weather. The Palm Beach special is a refreshing cocktail to enjoy in the summer heat.

While its name evokes the image of sandy Florida beaches, this post-prohibition cocktail is said to have originated in New York City. Once you try it, you’ll discover this martini definitely has a big city vibe.

When music video and commercial director Jeff Stewart, our resident mixologist, served up the Palm Beach special, I immediately loved the blast of grapefruit. It tasted light, lovely, and smooth. The clean tartness of the Palm Beach special cuts through your thirst.

For this sophisticated cocktail, Jeff recommends Hendricks gin and fresh-squeezed pink grapefruit.

Wanna try Jeff’s recipe? Here it is.

1/2 oz. gin
3/4 oz. fresh-squeezed pink grapefruit juice
1/2 oz. sweet red vermouth

Shake in iced cocktail strainer and serve in a cocktail glass. It’s that simple.

Keep your glass half-full. Drink responsibly.

And just because I love this film and it has “summer” in the title, here’s a trailer for “500 Days of Summer.” The film is tart and refreshing with a decidedly big city vibe. Cheers!
